Attack on democracy
“The Chamber approves the basic text of sentence reduction which benefits Bolsonaro with the approval of the PL and the protests of the government” (Politics, 10/12). Finally, the House approved something useful.
Luiz Henrique Moreira (Palhoca, SC)
The coup in progress.
Rosane Baptiste (São Paulo, SP)
The worst Congress, led by the worst president in its history, shows what it is capable of and shows even more clearly that the coup d’état fomented by Bolsonaro and his allies would have the support of the House. The one who saved democracy is the STF, now in the crosshairs of Congressional delinquency.
Alcione Malheiros dos Santos (Lajeado, RS)
Reaction
“Glauber Braga is forcibly expelled from the plenary after occupying Hugo Motta’s seat” (Congresso Nacional-9/12). Brazil needs parliamentarians with the moral stature of Glauber Rocha. In his heroic act against this disgusting amnesty, he highlights the hypocrisy of the House, reflected in particular by his presidency, which acted with truculence and cowardice, incapable of explaining who gave the order to expel the journalists, a glaring contrast with the right-wing mutineers. Motta cannot silence Glauber or the press.
Alvaro Rossan B. Prieto Silva (São Paulo, SP)
Braga equips the opposite spectrum by acting with violence and attempting to violate institutions by force. His actions do a disservice to the left-wing struggle and his dismissal would be beneficial for political dialogue.
Ivan Bruce Mallio (Osvaldo Cruz, SP)
Democracy does not consist of doing what you want, how you want, but of pursuing a cause along democratically established paths.
Allan WolfgangFranco Ruschmann (Balneário Camboriú, SC)
A Congress enemy of the people, which lets Eduardo Bolsonaro and Carla Zambelli win without working.
Paulo Luizona Castagnao (Caxias do Sul, RS)
To friends, everything; to enemies, the Law.
Alexandre Fonseca Junior Matos (Niteroi, RJ)
Inequality
“Brazil is the 5th most unequal country in the world, according to a study by Thomas Piketty’s team” (Economy, 9/12). Systemic corruption is the biggest problem, combined with soaring public debt and power advantages. Examples abound. The recipe for our failure.
Ary Dantas Oliveira Junior (Guaratingueta, SP)
And so humanity walks. The poor get poorer and lose their rights, and the rich get richer, protected by a servile Congress. This is why the late Mujica said that the poor right-hander is a wretch who fights against his own rights. Pure truth!
Ailton Souza (Cascavel, PR)
Most Brazilian presidents have been right-wing, reinforcing historical structures that concentrate income and power. The few left-wing governments have reduced poverty, but have been unable to change the foundations of inequality, in part because of structural limitations.
Eleuza Natalia Andrade Carvalho (Fernandópolis, SP)
Decline of 5.8%
“The decline in the number of births is accelerating in Brazil and is experiencing a 6th consecutive year of decline, says the IBGE” (Cotidiano, 10/12). It is disadvantageous to marry and have children in a sexist country, where women must take care of their children alone.
Katy by Mattos Frisvold (Extreme, MG)
Global trend. In 30 years, we will be old people in a country of old people.
Victor Mesquita (São Paulo, SP)
Environment
“Environmental licensing law violates 13 articles of the Constitution, prosecutors and prosecutors say” (Ambiente, 10/12). Let’s fight to revoke it. We deserve respect.
Grace Almeida (Belo Horizonte, MG)
Passage of the herd.
Maria SC Morato (São Paulo, SP)
Violence against women
“The businessman who attacked his wife before she fell from the 10th floor is arrested in SP” (Cotidiano, 12/10). How long will the troglodytes beat and kill women? Nothing justifies it. Prison is not enough.
Jeanne Santos (Rio de Janeiro, RJ)
The culture of violence must end, but how, with military schools preaching the use of weapons? I don’t see a better life in the future.
Rosangela Sylvestrin (Farroupilha, RS)
In force
“Australia is starting an experiment that bans children under 16 from using social networks” (Economy, 9/12). Australia is making a wise and necessary decision that will help its youth. Brazil should follow suit.
Marcos Barbosa (Casa Branca, SP)
Wrong measurement. It’s like prohibiting minors from going to libraries, with the most diverse types of books. The same thing happens with social networks. Choices arise from the education received at home or at school. This measure constitutes a serious intrusion by the State into private life.
Jonas Nunes dos Santos (Juiz de Fora, MG)
