The truck driver was robbed and forced to abandon the vehicle via Rodanel Mario Covas, in São Paulo. According to the highway concessionaire, the driver said he would not leave the car because a supposed bomb was strapped to his body.
SPMAR, which operates the highway, told GLOBO that the driver was trapped with a homemade bomb in the cab of the truck. The criminals are no longer around, and the bomb squad is waiting to disable the device.
The agency also reported that the company’s team saw the truck crossing the highway this morning and sent a vehicle to the location. The driver was disengaged, but refused to leave, claiming that he had a homemade bomb strapped to his body.
The Special Tactical Actions Group (GATE) of the São Paulo Military Police is dispatched to the scene. The entire road towards the Presidente Dutra Expressway was closed, resulting in 16-kilometre-long traffic jams.
The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP) said in a statement that the Military Highway Police were called in the early hours of Wednesday (12) to respond to the accident.
He explained, “At that time, a driver contacted the highway control center and informed him that he had been subjected to a kidnapping and that there were explosives in the truck. For this reason, a complete closure of the lanes along the road was determined, as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of users and service teams.”
According to the ministry, the site was identified and isolated by the highway police, and the accident is still ongoing. He pointed out that “the competent authorities are monitoring the process and awaiting the arrival of specialized capabilities to take appropriate measures.”
