Flamengo have confirmed that goalkeeper Matheus Cunha has left the delegation attending the Intercontinental Cup in Qatar to return to Brazil and attend the birth of his son. The athlete embarked this Wednesday (10) and is expected to arrive in Rio de Janeiro in the early hours of Thursday (11).
The club have advised that there will be no replacement for the position as competition regulations do not allow new registrations at this stage. The move means the red and black team finishes the tournament with just two goalie options.
At 24, Matheus Cunha already has a future mapped out. The player signed a pre-contract with Cruzeiro in July and will be integrated into the Céleste team in 2026, initially to serve as a reserve for Cássio and compete for space with Léo Aragão and Otávio.
Trained at Flamengo and revealed as a professional in 2021, Matheus played 55 matches with the club, after an exceptional career with the São Paulo youth team. He alternated periods as starter and substitute, notably with the rise of Agustín Rossi, voted best goalkeeper of Brasileirão 2025. This season, he played five matches, all of which Flamengo won, conceding only two goals.
