The volume of retail sales in the country increased by 0.5% in October compared to September. The previous month, compared to August, trade decreased by 0.2%. The data, published this Thursday (11/12), comes from the Monthly Commerce Survey (PMC), carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
According to the survey, in 2025, the retail sector accumulated a growth of 1.5%. Over the last 12 months, the rate was 1.7%.
The research shows that there was a predominance of positive rates between September and October 2025. Positive rates were recorded in seven of eight sectors:
- office, IT and communications equipment and materials (3.2%),
- fuels and lubricants (1.4%),
- furniture and household appliances (1.0%),
- books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (0.6%),
- other articles for personal and domestic use (0.4%),
- pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (0.3%),
- hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, drinks and tobacco (0.1%).
- the only negative result was that of fabrics, clothing and shoes, with a decrease of 0.3%.
What is PMC
- Begun in January 1995, the research produces indicators of current retail behavior in the country.
- To calculate the Monthly Trade Survey, the IBGE monitors gross resale income in formal businesses, with 20 or more workers, whose main activity is retail trade.
- The PMC provides indicators on real and nominal income, personnel employed, salaries and other remuneration.
In 12 months, in retail, only the categories of books, newspapers, magazines and stationery as well as office, IT and communication equipment and materials have seen a decline. The other six categories increased:
- Fuels and lubricants: 0.5%
- Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, drinks and tobacco: 1.0%
- Fabrics, clothing and shoes: 3.2%
- Furniture and appliances: 4.2%
- Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery items: 3.8%
- Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery: -2.4%
- Office, IT and communication equipment and materials: -0.3%
- Other items for personal and domestic use: 3.1%
Expanded retail
Broad retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, spare parts, construction materials and wholesale trade of food, beverages and tobacco, recorded an increase of 1.1% in October compared to September. Compared to October 2024, there is a decrease of 0.3%. For the year the result is a retraction of 0.3% and in the 12 month comparison there is stability.
Still in an expanded retail context, the vehicles and motorcycles, parts and parts segment recorded a sharp decline of 4.3%, a situation similar to that of construction materials, which fell by 3.9%. The wholesale trade of food, beverages and tobacco is not included in this comparison because it does not have a sufficient number of months to be subject to seasonal adjustment modeling, the IBGE informed.
