Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), ordered this Thursday (15) that the Federal Police carry out, within 15 days, a medical examination to assess the need for surgical intervention on former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
Bolsonaro’s lawyers requested on Tuesday (9) permission to leave the Federal Police Superintendence of Brasilia, where he is detained, to undergo new health procedures.
According to the defense, the former president needs surgery for hiccups and a hernia, which would require immediate hospitalization for 5 to 7 days.
When determining the expertise, Moraes said Bolsonaro underwent a forensic examination upon his arrest on November 22 and that at the time “there was no trace of a medical problem that would indicate the need for immediate surgical intervention.”
“On the same day, I ordered that the prisoner be detained at the Regional Superintendence of the Federal Police, in the Federal District, guaranteeing ‘the availability of full-time medical care to the accused Jair Messias Bolsonaro, on duty’. Since that moment, there has been no news of an emergency medical situation with Jair Messias Bolsonaro,” added the minister.
He also said that the medical examinations presented by the defense are not up to date, “the most recent was carried out three months ago, without the doctors having indicated at the time the need for immediate surgical intervention.”
In the document in which he requests the surgical intervention, the lawyers once again affirm that the former president suffers from a delicate health condition and that he is experiencing a state of mental confusion which led to the attempted violation of the electronic ankle bracelet detected by the federal police.
The defense also reiterated at the time the request for humanitarian house arrest.
“As informed by the doctor responsible for the treatment of the petitioner, the former President needs to undergo surgery, either to treat the hiccups, a consequence of the surgical interventions already recorded in the present case, or due to the worsening diagnosis of unilateral inguinal hernia, which also indicates the need for surgical intervention,” they said.
“Indeed, all the new medical documents recently added to the file reveal a significant worsening of the petitioner’s health condition, which previously required attention,” they conclude.
