Political godfather of the election of Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB) as President of the Chamber, former President of the Chamber Arthur Lira (PP-AL) showed himself unhappy with the behavior of his successor during the vote which spared the dismissal of MP Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ). To allies, Lira criticized the way Motta ran the House. Contacted, the President of the House made no comment.
The PP MP even declared that Motta was lost, that he had been “humiliated by Glauber” and that he had not had the solidarity of any MP during the vote. Lira especially criticized the fact that the President of the House insisted on directing the representation against Glauber and also against MP Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), even without an agreement. The PSOL deputy is unhappy with Lira.
According to the former President of the House, the result did not please the majority of the House, which was forced to save the mandate of two parliamentarians, even if, until a few hours before the vote, the trend was towards the confirmation of the two impeachments.
In messages sent to a PP group, Lira exposed her discomfort. “We have to reorganize the House. It’s a disaster,” the former House speaker said. Lira also recalled that “the PSOL represented itself against President Hugo within the PGR”, to reinforce the fact that Motta was politically defeated in the vote. The messages were revealed by G1 and confirmed by GLOBO.
According to Lira’s interlocutors, the former President of the House believes that Motta does not listen to his advice and limits himself to consulting a limited number of leaders, including the leader of the MDB, Isnaldo Bulhões (AL), Lira’s rival in Alagoas.
The former House speaker said Motta hadn’t done a good job articulating votes in the plenary for some time now, but the situation got worse with the Glauber vote. Lira believes that Motta is lost. According to his interlocutors, the PP deputy even declared that if he had been under his administration, Glauber would have been dismissed with more than 400 votes.
The crisis arose after a reversal yesterday, when MPs approved a six-month suspension of Glauber’s mandate, a day after the parliamentarian held the presidency of the House for about an hour and tried to obstruct the work of the plenary.
The score was 318 votes for and 141 against. Until early yesterday afternoon, the scenario assessed by parliamentarians was that of a dismissal of Glauber. On the eve of the vote, the PSOL deputy was forcibly removed from the presidency of the Chamber. This triggered an immediate movement by government parliamentarians against Motta, accused of having lost the conditions to continue leading the House.
Legislative police were called and forcibly removed him, amid unrest and reports of attacks on lawmakers. The Council then restricted access to the plenary, expelling journalists and advisors, which further soured the atmosphere. Later, when the session resumes. Rank-and-file parliamentarians gave harsh speeches and publicly criticized them.
Behind the scenes, Lira criticized the situation and told his interlocutors that under his administration, there had never been a similar episode where it was necessary to call the Legislative Police to find the conditions to chair the session.
