After a long break, the presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Venezuela, Nicolas Madurobroke the period of silence and began speaking directly again last week. The meeting took place through a telephone call negotiated by mutual agreement between the diplomats of the two countries.
The information was confirmed at Value near the Planalto Palace. According to the government, the agenda of the call was “peace in the Caribbean region.” The reason is that in recent months there has been a threat of a possible war between the governments of Maduro and Donald Trump, the president of the United States.
Tensions between Americans and Venezuelans began after Trump began accusing Maduro of having ties to drug traffickers who supplied the illicit drug market on American territory. From there, the United States decided to send military personnel to the Caribbean Sea region, which increased the hostile climate in the region.
The connection between Lula and Maduro comes just days after Brazilian businessman Joesley Batista, of the J&F Group, visited Caracas last week and met in person with President Nicolás Maduro. The presidents of Brazil and Venezuela had been divided for about a year, ever since Lula decided not to recognize the election result in the neighboring country.
After Joesley’s trip to Venezuela was revealed, the Palácio do Planalto began working behind the scenes to reject the theory that the J&F businessman was sent as an emissary from the PT government.
The subject is sensitive because Brazil will have to publicly oppose any military action in South America, precisely at the time when the PT administration manages to make Trump aware of a possible agreement to end the “customs tariffs”.
As shown in Value A few weeks ago, faced with this dilemma, the Brazilian government is trying to normalize the discourse according to which a divergence in diplomatic relations between Brazil and the United States should be faced calmly by both parties – especially if this disagreement concerns the possible intervention against the Venezuelan government of Nicolas Maduro.
This message has already been sent to the Americans since the opening of a negotiating table between the countries, starting in September. According to the interlocutors, the challenge for the PT administration will be, after the probable attack on Venezuela, to also disseminate this discourse in Brazilian society, in order to minimize any criticism of Lula that affects the evaluation of the government.
THE Value found that signs that the United States should not back down from the attack on Venezuela became more evident after the last meeting between Chancellor Mauro Vieira and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on November 13.
According to sources close to the conversation, on this occasion Rubio once again spoke of the American intention to promote some kind of attack against Maduro due to his alleged link to drug trafficking. According to his interlocutors, Vieira listened to the explanations of Trump’s advisor and expressed that Brazil must oppose any action that would break with the tradition of peace in South America.
