Flamengo will have an obstacle with a Brazilian accent in the semi-finals of the Intercontinental Cup. Winger Ewerton, born in Amapá, defends the colors of the Pyramids and is well aware of the scale of the challenge that awaits his team this Saturday (13), in Doha. For the Egyptian club, founded only 17 years ago and which is experiencing a meteoric rise in Africa, the clash against the four-time champion Libertadores represents the culmination of its sporting trajectory. The 28-year-old striker did not hesitate to define this match as the most important moment for the institution so far.
Ewerton took a humble stance and placed all the responsibility on Rio’s side. He acknowledges the technical disparity, but sees this situation as a psychological advantage for Pyramids.
“For everyone here it was a dream, it will be the most special match in the club’s history, I think it will be the biggest match in the club’s history. A club that is new and growing season after season. We dream match after match, it was like that against Al-Ahli, now it will be against Flamengo. They are favorites, we know that. There is no pressure, we have nothing to lose. We have to give everything in the 90 minutes and see what’s going to happen,” the player said.
Pyramids has its weapons against Flamengo
Despite his favoritism, the Brazilian warned against the weapons that the Egyptian team intends to use at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium. According to him, the Pyramids are banking on athletic imposition to stop Flamengo’s engaging pace. The local championship requires a lot of contact and resistance, which has shaped the team’s style of play.
“Physically, it’s a very strong team, which defends very well. The Egyptian Championship in itself is not easy, it’s a very physical championship. I think that’s the team’s strong point,” he analyzed.
Behind the scenes, Ewerton acts as an informal consultant to the coaching staff and his teammates. Ever since Rubro-Negro secured their place in the global tournament, Pyramids players have been searching for information on the Brazilian giant. The striker revealed that the group had watched Fla’s debut against Cruz Azul and now had a better understanding of the magnitude of the opponent.
When asked which pieces deserve special attention, he prefers not to individualize them.
“Everyone. It’s not enough to be careful, is it? We know the quality, I don’t think they do it much, but yesterday they were able to watch a little bit of the game and know that Flamengo is a great team. Since Flamengo won the Libertadores, they ask me, we talk. I always tell them certain things, but now they have a little more idea of what Flamengo is and how good it is,” he concluded.
