More than 10,000 undocumented immigrants have been detained in Los Angeles since raids in that western U.S. city began in June, President Donald Trump’s administration reported Thursday (12/11/2025).
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has promoted a massive wave of deportations, one of his campaign promises against irregular migration.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement that the arrests in Los Angeles came despite “violence by rioters and demonization by Sanctuary City politicians.”
Many cities in the United States are designated “sanctuary cities” because they have regulations that prevent police forces from collaborating with federal forces in apprehending immigrants in an irregular situation.
The immigration raids in Los Angeles sparked a wave of popular protests and prompted President Trump to deploy the National Guard and hundreds of Marines, a move that was criticized by local leaders and California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.
A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the withdrawal of soldiers who are still patrolling the streets of the Californian city.
Trump is accusing Democratic governors of failing to cooperate in his efforts to end what he calls an “invasion.”
Migrant advocates denounce that agents are masked and directly search for people who speak Spanish or look Hispanic.
