It was almost 11 p.m. on Wednesday when lawyer Fabio Pagnozzi took the Chamber podium. Without good arguments to defend Carla Zambelli, the doctor appealed to the corporatism of parliamentarians.
“Right now you are setting a very dangerous precedent. There are more than a hundred lawsuits against federal deputies within the STF,” he said in a warning tone. “It is not necessary to like her. You just have to think that if Carla Zambelli is impeached, it will become a repetitive thing in this Assembly”, he affirmed.
Carla Zambelli is a criminal twice sentenced to 15 years in prison. Instead of surrendering, she fled the country and was put on Interpol’s wanted list. Captured in Italy, she was taken to a women’s penitentiary, where she awaits extradition proceedings.
In the first sentence, the Federal Court ordered the Board of Directors of the Chamber to declare the loss of the mandate of the Bolsonarista. Representative Hugo Motta ignored the court’s order and sent the case back to the full bench, as if his colleagues had the power to review the Court’s decisions.
Wednesday evening, lawyer Pagnozzi relied on Their Excellencies’ survival instinct. “In the world, we don’t know tomorrow. Tomorrow, it will perhaps be the gentlemen of the left or the center who will be persecuted,” he declared.
The doctor also guaranteed that the acquittal would only be symbolic, as the client would resign after the vote. The promise was short-lived. Hours after the House acquitted Zambelli, the congressman’s son denied the lawyer. “This agreement never happened,” he told Folha de S.Paulo.
The operation to save the prisoner was short-lived. This only further demoralized the Speaker of the House. Yesterday, Minister Alexandre de Moraes canceled the maneuver, decreed the end of Zambelli’s mandate and ordered Motta to swear in his replacement.
In a message addressed to his colleagues, MP Arthur Lira deplored that the management of his successor was “in disorder”. You’re right, but you didn’t mention that he was responsible for your choice.
