Eight years after being flooded by 60 million liters of water, the structure of the future Gávea metro station is finally dry. The measure is part of the interventions necessary to complete line 4, which goes from Ipanema to Barra da Tijuca. Paralyzed in 2016, work resumed in August this year, with the process of emptying the space where the platform will be located. Just yesterday, blasting work began to open the tunnel that will connect the São Conrado station. The opening of the new section is planned for July 2028

— We managed to complete the oil change two months early. We have already resumed blasting. There are still 60 meters of tunnel to open, and this process is expected to take around 11 months. This is necessary because the equivalent of 140 thousand tonnes of stone will still have to be removed. At this stage, in parallel, the tracks and other structures of the future station will be installed, — explained the Secretary of State for Transport and Urban Mobility, Priscila Sakalem.
The step-by-step process leading to the emptying of the two large 18 meter diameter wells, which had to be flooded to ensure the integrity of the walls of the access holes to the station, included preventive inspections of approximately 2,500 units within a hundred meter radius of the interventions and the lowering of the water table.

The next stage, which is expected to last 11 months according to the Consórcio Construtor Gávea (CCG), will consist of rock denotations with explosives – there should be two per day, one early in the morning; and another at the end of the afternoon. In addition to the 60 meters of tunnel, it will be necessary to drill 14 meters of one of the shafts (West) and 136 meters in length to install a mezzanine, a platform and a track.
Once the excavations are completed, it will be time to carry out the structure and finishes, assemble the tracks, install the systems and establish a square around the station building, which will have one floor. Designs for the interior and exterior of the space are still being detailed. However, it is already known, for example, that the Gávea station will be the deepest in the Rio metro, with its depth of 52 meters, and that two high-speed elevators with a capacity of 30 passengers will transport passengers from the surface to the boarding area and vice versa.
Yesterday, Governor Cláudio Castro himself pressed the button for the first detonation of a stone. According to Secretary Priscila Sakalem, once delivered, the station is expected to accommodate up to 20,000 people per day. She explained that the emptying process was monitored by technicians, who did not detect any risk to neighboring buildings.
The agreement for the completion of the Gávea station was signed in April this year. One of the documents signed is a Conduct Adjustment Term (TAC), in which the operator of line 4 withdraws from the contract and transfers the service to MetrôRio — responsible for lines 1 and 2 —, which has committed to investing BRL 600 million in the work. In exchange, the Line 4 exploration contract will be extended for another ten years, until 2048. The state government will transfer 97 million reais.
The project currently being developed, however, is different from the one initially conceived more than ten years ago. Initially, the idea was to connect Gávea to the São Conrado and Antero de Quental stations, in Leblon. However, this would require the resumption of a second work front, which would open an underground path with a machine known as a tatuzão, which will not happen. Therefore, passengers who are in Gávea and want to go to Ipanema, and vice versa, will have to go to São Conrado and change. The connection with Antero de Quental will not be established.
As with other metro projects, it is the suction pumps that keep the station without water. Stopping the pumps and letting the water rise at the end of 2017 in the two tunnels of the future Gávea station was a temporary solution, adopted under the administration of the governor at the time, Luiz Fernando Pezão. At the time, the state government was facing a serious financial crisis that led to the interruption of a series of projects, in addition to allegations that the construction of Metro Line 4 was overvalued by 3.7 billion reais.
