There’s something strange about this photo, and it’s not so easy to figure out exactly what. Perhaps it is the lion’s posture, tame and calm behind the glass from which he observes visitors to the Zoological and Botanical Garden of the city of Kazan in Russia. Or perhaps the strange thing lies in the posture of the two people, who alternately look at it in a relaxed manner, as if they were in the living room of the house (apart from the warm clothing that suggests that they are in places that are not exactly heated): the adult is lying on the floor, the girl is sitting and seems – and this is only a guess – to make eye contact with the cat. Zoos have an air of sadness that is similar to that of old circuses: even though no one seems to be suffering here, that impression perhaps permeates this photo too. A strangeness that is, despite everything, somewhat sluggish, reserved and melancholic.
