After the success of “Superman”, released last July, the time has come for Kara Zor-El, cousin of the famous superhero, to have a cinematic version. With Milly Alcock (known for the series “House of the Dragon”) as the protagonist and Craig Gillespie directing, “Supergirl” will not show the young heroine on Earth, but rather traveling through space and fighting for justice. During CCXP, which took place last weekend in São Paulo, O GLOBO saw live the trailer of the film, released this Thursday (11), and followed the broadcast of a conversation between James Gunn, CEO of DC Studios, the director and the actress. The production is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
In the conversation, broadcast live in a reserved area of the pop culture event, the trio answered questions asked by the press and guests from around the world. Despite the more intimate action, “Supergirl” was one of the highlights of Warner’s booth at CCXP. In addition to activities for fans and visitors, the space presented the original costume of the film’s heroine.
Initially titled “Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow”, the film will be a science fiction based on the DC comic book of the same name, written by Tom King and illustrated by Brazilian Bilquis Evely. In the film version, the plot is written by American Anna Nogueira.
CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, James Gunn is also responsible for the development of the new DC Comics cinematic universe. Director, writer and producer of the recent “Superman,” Gunn says he had thought about bringing Supergirl to the DCU even before taking the helm of the studio.
— It was something that already interested me a lot. When the graphic novel came out, before Peter and I were talking about taking over DC Studios, I told him how great the graphic novel was and that it had an interesting take on Supergirl. I immediately thought that Milly would be perfect for the role, even though I didn’t know her name, since I knew her from “House of the Dragon” (laughs). Milly will be a “Rock and Roll Supergirl” – he declared.
Previously, the heroine had already been the subject of an American television series. Starring Melissa Benoist, the production ran for six seasons and aired between 2015 and 2021. Unlike the previous version, this time Kara will be portrayed in a more satirical and flawed manner. By consensus, the three define it as a “mess”.

In the new storyline, Supergirl travels through space when she teams up with young Ruthye Marie Knoll to track down the killer of the girl’s father, Krem.
— He’s a very flawed character for a superhero. She doesn’t want to play the role of a heroine and faces many personal demons. She is an anti-heroine and is drawn, reluctantly, into the world where she must be that heroine. And we see how she deals with it, how she copes with the situation and how she finds herself in this story — said Gillespie, director of the film.
Supergirl debuted in the new DC Cinematic Universe before it even had its own production. Indeed, the character made a brief appearance in the last minutes of his cousin’s film, “Superman”, already giving a brief idea of the “mess” that would follow.
During the conversation, the three were asked about the differences between the two characters. For Milly, the two have opposite personalities: while Supergirl is cynical and “tough”, Superman is openly trusting of people.
— Supergirl, compared to Superman, was a completely different creation. Kara grew up on a dying planet, everyone she knew and loved died. So she doesn’t trust many people. Clark is the opposite of that, as he has had a very sheltered life and hopes for the good in people, the actress said. — Kara never pretends. If she’s not well, everyone will know. It was very refreshing to play her.
As for the similarities between the films, it must be appreciated by the audience: Krypto, the Superdog, will be back on the big screen.
— Krypto is still a terrible dog. The difference is that Kara loves him anyway, while Clark is irritated with him – Gunn joked.
Like Gunn, Gillespie also assumes at some point in the conversation that Milly will set a new tone for Supergirl. For the director, if the actress is a “rebellious spirit”, the character uses cynicism as protective armor.
— There is a “punk” feel and Milly incorporated everything — he added.
With simpler answers than those of her companions, Milly said she believed her version of the protagonist would speak to a new generation of women who want to identify with feature film dramas. In 2026, “Supergirl” should go against the grain of other heroines, sometimes represented as more perfect than male protagonists.
— Supergirl shows that women can be flawed and don’t have to be perfect to achieve internal resolution. We are forced to accept this narrative that we have to be perfect in every aspect of life… But Kara is someone who accepts her flaws in a beautiful and special way — she said.
