The acquisition of the content of private conversations related to internal party processes before a notary had personal consequences, explained Juan Lobato, senator and former leader of the Madrid PSOE, in an interview with “La 2 Cat” and Ràdio 4. He explained that his decision was aimed at guaranteeing the authenticity of the documentation about the leak of a screenshot related to the Alberto González Amador case. According to the media itself, Lobato emphasized that his behavior was based solely on respect for ethical boundaries, without seeking personal benefits or eventual political rehabilitation.
In his speech, the senator expressed the urgent need to examine internally and transparently the serious complaints raised in political parties, stressing that delayed responses not only harm the alleged victims but also undermine the image of the organizations. As La 2 Cat and Ràdio 4 report, Lobato placed his position in the context of the recent events surrounding Francisco Salazar, a former PSOE activist who is under investigation for alleged sexual harassment following anonymous complaints.
The senator called for the establishment of processes that enable complaints to be dealt with quickly and effectively. Arguing that any delay increases the damage, he called for the establishment of clear protocols that, in addition to strengthening institutional transparency, primarily serve to protect those who report. As La 2 Cat and Ràdio 4 reported, Lobato warned of the risks of poor management in sensitive cases and called on political groups to review their internal methods so as not to worsen the negative consequences.
In relation to the party structures, Lobato assessed the prevailing organizational model as too vertical. As the senator emphasized in statements quoted by “La 2 Cat” and Ràdio 4, the lack of real mechanisms for internal disagreements limits the plurality of debate and weakens political alternatives. This, Lobato described, discourages the expression of different opinions because it is perceived as a sign of weakness: “Thinking differently is seen as weakness,” he summarized. He believed that this dynamic leads to more closed organizations, less open to open debate and with little flexibility to adapt to current challenges.
The former socialist leader claimed that transforming these dynamics was essential to modernizing the inner workings of parties. As outlined in the information published by “La 2 Cat” and Ràdio 4, initiating changes towards more agile and participatory models would allow a better response to current challenges and restore the credibility of political organizations.
Regarding the impact that the notarial formalization of his conversations had on a personal level, Juan Lobato reiterated in the interview that he remains convinced that he did not act based on calculation of opportunities, but on principles: “No regrets. I believe that there are ethical limits, everyone has their own and I believe that not everything is possible in politics.” The media reported that Lobato defended the visit to the notary in order to dispel doubts about the accuracy of the documents presented.
At the national political level, Lobato also addressed the impact of the recent verdict against the former Attorney General, and concluded that the court result represents an achievement for Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid. Regarding the current parliamentary situation, he believes that the ability to govern remains possible as long as the executive concentrates its efforts on measures to improve the well-being of citizens and consolidate coexistence, reported “La 2 Cat” and Ràdio 4.
Another topic of discussion was the future of political pacts. Lobato expressed his skepticism about the feasibility of new agreements between the PSOE and the Junts, since in his opinion the Catalan party always puts its own interests first and, on certain occasions, allies itself with the right and the far right on key issues of the congress. According to “La 2 Cat” and Ràdio 4, the senator attributed Junts to a strategy that complicates the parliamentary balance necessary for institutional stability and calls into question the level of political coherence of the group.
As Lobato described in the interview, a deep reform of the functioning of political parties, focusing on openness to dialogue and agility in the face of internal conflicts, is essential to ensure the integrity of organizations and strengthen societal trust in public activity. He reiterated his thesis that protection and respect for victims of possible irregularities should be at the heart of the priorities, according to statements published by “La 2 Cat” and Ràdio 4. He stressed that the prompt response to complaints helps to demonstrate the importance that parties attach to institutional integrity and the protection of the well-being of their members, elements that, in his opinion, should be permanently present in political activity.
