Jesús Soto, Damián Ortega, Sandra Gamarra, La Chola Poblete are some of the main names that visitors to the Masp, the Assis Chateaubriand Art Museum in São Paulo, will bear throughout the year 2026, according to the calendar published this Friday (12). The museum will devote the year to the histories and identities of Latin America after focusing this year on ecology.
The exhibition program will begin in March with a panoramic exhibition by Peruvian Sandra Gamarra Heshiki, with 80 works from the last 25 years of her production, in the Lina Bo Bardi building, the oldest and most traditional. “The artist questions the neutrality of artistic representations by using the critical appropriation of paintings and sculptures, particularly from the colonial period, establishing the “replica” as a form of response to established narratives,” indicates the museum note.
The Mexican Damián Ortega, with his unusual sculptures made from everyday objects, will have a retrospective in May. The work of the Venezuelan Jesús Soto, who died 20 years ago, one of the representatives of kinetic art, will be highlighted in November and until April 2027.
At the same time, in September, the “Histórias Latino-Americanas” collective will occupy five floors of the Pietro Maria Bardi building, the newest building in Masp, inaugurated in March of this year. A series of works is also planned for the video room, in the basement of the museum, with works by Clara Ianni, Oscar Muñoz and Regina José Galindo.
