Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), voted this Friday (12) to make the three accused of the attempted bombing at Brasilia Airport on Christmas Eve 2022.
They were accused by the PGR (Attorney General’s Office) of association with armed criminals, attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law and coup d’état, in addition to having undermined the security of air transport.
George Washington de Oliveira Sousa, Alan Diego dos Santos and Wellington Macedo were denounced. According to the complaint, they organized the installation of an explosive device in a tanker truck near the airport. The three were supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
George Washington allegedly manufactured the device and the two other defendants placed the material in the vehicle, “with the aim of causing terror, social instability and justifying military intervention.”
In his vote, Moraes declared that “are unconstitutional those conducts and demonstrations which have the clear objective of controlling or even annihilating the force of critical thought, essential to the democratic regime, just as those which aim to destroy it, as well as its republican institutions, by preaching violence, arbitrariness, lack of respect for the separation of powers and fundamental rights”.
“There will be no democratic rule of law without independent and harmonious state powers, as well as the provision of fundamental rights and instruments allowing the control and sustainability of these requirements.”
The trial takes place in the virtual plenary of the first college of the Supreme Court (the forum where the ministers vote, without discussion), during a session scheduled to last until the 19th. In addition to Moraes, the group includes ministers Cristiano Zanin, Cármen Lúcia and Flávio Dino.
