
Iranian security forces on Friday arrested Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi, 53, who will receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, during an event in memory of a prominent lawyer and dissident that he was found dead last week.
The Narges Foundation reported in a statement published in X that the Iranian activist was arrested “violently” by Iranian security forces, during a ceremony to honor the memory of lawyer Josrou Alikordi, who died a week ago in “strange circumstances”.
“His brother Mehdi Mohammadi, present during the event, confirmed his arrest. According to several sources, others recognized activists human rights activists, such as Sepidé Qolian, Hasti Amiri, Puran Nazemi and Alieh Motalebzadé, were also detained during the same incident,” he said.
The Foundation has indicated that, for the moment, there is no information detailed information on the reasons for the arrest or the circumstances surrounding it, although she indicated that she was “closely following” the situation and “will provide updated information” on the matter.
“The Narges Foundation calls immediate release and unconditional support of all those detained during their presence at the commemoration ceremony to show their respect and demonstrate solidarity. His detention constitutes a serious violation of his fundamental rights,” he said.
Mohammadi was put in provisional release in December 2024 following a request for medical reasons approved by the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office. Months earlier, in October, she was hospitalized after her family reported that authorities had prevented her from receiving treatment for more than two months despite her deteriorating condition. health.
Since she was temporarily released, those around her have warned that took the risk to be sent back to prison. The activist, who spent most of the last 20 years of her life behind bars, suffered multiple heart attacks and underwent emergency surgery in 2022.
Mohammadi was convicted up to five times, accumulating a total sentence of 31 years in prison, mainly for his role in protests against the strict dress code in Iran. The activist showed him support repeatedly to anti-government protests for the death of Mahsa Amini.
Throughout his life, Mohammadi founded associations for the defense of women’s rights and wrote books and articles to denounce the abuses they suffered at the hands of security forces and authorities, particularly in the country’s prisons.
