With the global aging of the female population and increasing life expectancy, the demand for integrated health care for adulthood and maturity is also increasing. A phase that affects many women between the ages of 40 and 60 is perimenopause, a period of hormonal transition that precedes menopause and can last 2 to 10 years.
Recent research reveals significant data: In one population study, 81.2% of perimenopausal women reported symptoms associated with the transition, hot flashes, mood changes, insomnia, and fatigue. In many of them, symptoms present with moderate to severe intensity, impacting quality of life and physical and emotional well-being.
Additionally, gynecologist specializing in women aged 40 and over, Dr. Rebeca Filgueiras (CRM 98890 / RQE 127041), explains that if ignored, perimenopause can be associated with greater long-term health risks. “Loss of bone mass, metabolic changes, worsening cardiovascular profile, and compromised mental health are some of the conditions that affect health when symptoms are ignored,” says Dr. Rebeca.
Even with this data, many women do not feel prepared or informed to face this phase: one study found that more than 90% of them were never taught about menopause in school, and more than 60% reported a feeling of complete ignorance about the transition.
Based on scientific evidence and contemporary women’s health protocols, Dr. Rebeca emphasizes that with an individualized assessment, it is possible to align safe hormonal therapies, healthy lifestyle habits and emotional support, helping women navigate this phase in a more balanced, comprehensive and better informed way, offering a careful and up-to-date look at women in perimenopause, providing advice not only on symptom relief, but also on preventing future problems and maintaining of quality of life.
