Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi was “violently” arrested this Friday during a tribute to Khosrow Alikordi, a human rights lawyer who died last week, according to her foundation.
Mohammadi, 53, was arrested “violently” by Iranian security forces, the foundation said in a message on X, in which it specified having received “credible information” on this fact.
He added that besides the Nobel Prize, activists Asadollah Fakhimi, Akbar Amini, Hasan Bagherinia and Abolfazl Abri were also arrested during the ceremony honoring Alikordi, a well-known lawyer found dead in his office in Tehran a week ago.
Mohammadi chanted several slogans during the tribute, including “Long live Iran,” according to images retweeted by the foundation, before being arrested and beaten.
Furthermore, the families of Sepideh Qolian, Pouran Nazemi, Hasti Amiri and Aliyeh Motalebzadeh also confirmed the arrests.
The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate was on parole and publicly denounced, at the end of November, that the Iranian authorities had “permanently” banned her from leaving the country and had not issued her a passport to be able to visit her two children, whom she had not seen for eleven years.
Mohammadi had been out of prison for a year when she was released due to health problems.
The activist was arrested thirteen times, convicted nine times and last imprisoned in 2021.
Despite her convictions and imprisonment, the human rights and women’s rights activist continues to denounce human rights violations in Iran, including the application of the death penalty and violence against women who do not wear the Islamic veil.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded her the prize in 2023 “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and for the promotion of human rights and freedom for all.”
