Cameras already monitor Calero Park, a long space in Ciudad Lineal with various attractions for residents’ use and enjoyment but plagued for years by Latino gang violence. And this, although it is located only one street from … the National Police Station in the neighborhood, very close to the Ventas market. For this reason, Madrid City Council has installed a new video surveillance system, made up of five high-resolution cameras, some trifocal and with 360º coverage, and all equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
The vice mayor of the capital and delegate for Security and Emergencies, Inma Sanz, yesterday verified the operation of a network, which will also be activated soon in Pradolongo Park (Usera district), with 14 new cameras, which will bring to 404 the number of devices controlled by the municipal body. Sanz, before recalling that nearly 30% of these cameras already integrate AI, a percentage which should continue to grow.
The vice-mayor explained that its installation is only in “points useful to the police and technically viable”, excluding a massive installation in the city. In the case of Calero Park, its location responds to episodes of clashes between gangs, as proof, among other episodes, that it was the place chosen for a “meeting” between DDP and Trinitarios, to settle scores after two previous attacks as a sign of revenge. Now the cameras will be able to locate patterns in existing recordings and reconstruct movement sequences to support police investigations.
Beyond Calero and Padrolongo, whose joint investment reached 1.3 million euros, the video surveillance systems also reached Plaza del Dos de Mayo (Centro, 16), Plaza Elíptica (Carabanchel/Usera, 15), Puerta del Sol (4 new cameras) and Cullera Street (Latina, 18). The Town Hall is planning new projects in the squares of Porto (Carabanchel) and Jacinto Benavente (Centro), as well as improvements in Tirso de Molina (Centro) and AZCA (Tetouan).
