The sun was already setting over the La Boca neighborhood by 5 p.m. The doors of La Bombonera opened wide. A rush of blue and gold began to flow through Brandsen. It wasn’t just any day: on December 12th, Boca Fans’ Day, thousands of supporters once again gathered with the same strength and dedication as in previous years.
The stadium – this temple of cement and popular soul – welcomed first the youngest, then entire families, grandparents and grandchildren, the flags and songs intertwined as if they were living inheritances. There was a mix of emotions and nostalgia: for many, it was the last big Boca meeting of the year, a ceremony that unites them beyond the sports results or what happens on the field.
At 6 p.m., the official start date, not an inch of the stands were without color. Some fans wore T-shirts with their last names, others wore old yellow scarves that had survived decades of winters and summers. From the lower stands to the popular stands, different voices intoned the same collective beat that seemed to vibrate the entire structure of the stadium.
Authoritarians don’t like that
The practice of professional and critical journalism is a mainstay of democracy. That is why it bothers those who believe that they are the owners of the truth.
The celebration opened with bands and murgas shaking the ground with bass drums, snare drums and guitars. The Murga Los Amantes de La Boca mixed with the more urban rhythm of up-and-coming bands, and the audience responded with applause, raised hands and endless choruses. Each song seemed to be a declaration of love, an affirmation of identity.
There was no shortage of impromptu lectures that turn every fan into a storyteller: “I came here for the first time with my old man,” said one, pointing to an expired ticket; “I brought my son here so he could feel what I felt,” said another, his eyes shining. La Bombonera, in its eternal role as an emotional canvas, absorbed every emotion and returned it in the form of an echo.
As the Buenos Aires sky turned orange and the afternoon turned into night, the voices continued to echo in La Bombonera – and will continue to do so. Because for Boca fans, this is not just a day of celebration: it is a living reminder of what it means to be part of a passion that never dies.
