The Palotina jury court in western Paraná convicted a man of Paraguayan nationality last Thursday (11/12) for the murder of his own daughter, a five-month-old baby. The crime occurred on July 13 last year, in the municipality of Maripá.
The defendant was sentenced to 45 years and 10 months in prison. At the time, the affair aroused great emotion among the city’s residents.
According to the investigation, the accused, currently aged 23, killed the child because he was embarrassed by his crying. The baby was allegedly attacked with punches and suffered a fractured skull, which led to his death.
During the trial, the prosecution argued that the murder was committed for trivial reasons, since the father had rejected his daughter and started attacking her because of her crying. The prosecution also highlighted the use of cruel means and the use of resources which made it impossible to defend the victim, who, due to her age, had no capacity to react.
According to the prosecution, the crime was committed because of her female gender, in a context of domestic and family violence. The fact that the victim was a descendant of the defendant and that she was under 14 years old was also taken into account.
In addition to the prison sentence, the convicted person will have to pay R$30,000 in compensation to the victim’s family. The defendant, who was already in prison, was kept in detention until the immediate start of his sentence.
