The mayor of Seville, Jose Luis Sanz This Saturday the ceramic sign bearing the name ‘Antigua Cava de los Gitanos’ was inaugurated, located in what is now Pagés del Corro Street, as an act of closing the 600 years of the arrival of the gypsy people. … in Spain and, more precisely, in the Triana district.
This is a new tile with which the Seville City Council, through the Directorate of Urban Planning and in collaboration with the Niculoso Pisano Association, seeks to recover part of the city’s history reflected in Olavide’s street plan of 1771 and to promote Triana ceramics along the way.
During the event, Mayor Sanz highlighted that “this tile recognizes the great contribution that the gypsy community has made to Seville for centuriesand more particularly in the Triana district. The gypsies who lived here helped to forge the culture and identity of this district, and it was also here, in this district of Triana, that the Brotherhood of Gypsies was founded.
José Luis Sanz wanted to highlight the ceramics of Triana because “to talk about ceramics in Seville is to talk about Triana, a historic district with a tradition of pottery and the authenticity of this district is also reflected in ceramics”. This new tiling was possible thanks to this year’s adoptive ceramist and Trianera Maria Dolores Gomez Gomilaowner of the “Rocío Triana” workshop, on Antillano Campos Street, who, since the late 90s, has continued this tradition with her husband Rafael Muñiz.
“Thank you, Lola, for donating this tile, for being one of the best representatives of Triana ceramics that we are lucky to have and for contributing to the recovery of the Callejero of Olavide with which part of the history of our city is also recovered”, added the mayor.
This “Antigua Cava de los Gitanos” sign joins the thirteen ceramic tiles that the municipality has already placed and inaugurated with the old street of… la Mar, Bayona, Tiendas, Callejón de los Pobres, Sardinas, Tundidores, Cantarranas, La Mosca, Corral del Agua, del Burro, Gradas, Pescado y Aceite.
