Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said he hoped to discuss a peace plan between Ukraine and Russia with US President Donald Trump, adding that “peace is not far away” after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Erdogan met with Putin in Turkmenistan on Friday, and they reviewed “comprehensive peace efforts” to end the war, according to a statement from Erdogan’s office released Friday, with Turkey reiterating its willingness to support peace efforts.
“After this meeting with Putin, we hope to have the opportunity to also discuss the peace plan with US President Trump. Peace is not far away, we see it,” Erdogan told reporters aboard his flight back from Turkmenistan.
Erdogan had told Putin on Friday that a limited ceasefire in the war, with a particular focus on energy facilities and ports, could be beneficial.
“The Black Sea should not be seen as a battlefield. Such a situation would only harm Russia and Ukraine,” Erdogan said in statements released by his office on Saturday.
“Everyone needs safe navigation in the Black Sea. This must be guaranteed.”
Russia attacked two Ukrainian ports on Friday, damaging three Turkish ships, including a vessel carrying supplies, Ukrainian officials and a shipowner said, days after Moscow threatened to cut Ukraine off from the sea.
