The pressure on the Leganés Rooftop, once a lavish arena with a folding roof and multi-purpose space, is increasing inexorably as Christmas approaches. And as proof, the second major raid carried out by the National Police in just two weeks. … with a toll this time of 19 people arrested and 376 others identified. The agents thus maintain the siege of the leisure places outside the arena, scene for years of serious clashes between gang members and other regulars of the Madrid lumpen.
The operation, in which the Leganés Local Police and the Labor Inspectorate also participated, took place late in the morning, just at the start of the weekend, when this type of recreational spaces are most frequented. As a result, officers arrested 17 individuals for violating immigration law, one for criminal action and another for violation of sentence. In addition, they filed ten drug charges and four more weapons charges (including two expandable tusks, brass knuckles and a spray gun).
Earlier this month, this newspaper reported a similar intervention, which made it possible to identify 550 people (many of whom had criminal records); 30 detained (all for violation of immigration law, except two with legal complaint); four reports for drug possession and three sanctions from the Labor Inspectorate.
Although many present acknowledge that there are stabbings, drugs, gang members and robberies, everyone tends to agree that any era in the past has been worse; an extreme refuted by recent chronicles of events. The last one, on Halloween night, when a couple found, as they said, a box, they took it home and inside they discovered a gun. The girl was shot in the face while they were “playing” with the gun. Her boyfriend, who took her to the street and left her lying there and seriously injured, is already in prison.
In July 2024, the Local Government Board approved the award of the contract for the installation of a camera system outside the Old Arena and surrounding fairgrounds. Then, the Councilor for Citizen Security has already highlighted that it is necessary to remedy the deficiencies of video surveillance in certain parts of the city, such as in the La Coverta area, “a nightlife area where the greatest number of offenses and incidents are concentrated, and which sometimes generates conflicts and inconvenience for neighbors”.
