One year after the death of the founder of Mango Isak Andicduring a fall on a mountain path in Collbató (Barcelona), the judicial investigation remains open, with his son Jonathan in the crosshairs of the Mossos d’Esquadra, but without conclusive evidence which indicates for the moment a homicide.
The founder of the Mango fashion empire, the richest man in Cataloniadied on December 14 last year, after falling from a height of about 150 meters during an excursion with his eldest son to visit the saltpeter caves of Collbató (Barcelona), a route without major difficulties that crosses the Montserrat massif.
On Friday, the family of Andic and Mango paid tribute to the businessman on the first anniversary of his death, which falls this Sunday, and remembered him as a generous person which left a legacy with a significant socio-economic impact.
A lawsuit filed… and reopened
The South Barcelona Metropolitan Police Region of Mossos, under the direction of the Commissioner Édouard Sallentformer Catalan police chief, first investigated the case and concluded that Andic’s fall was accidental, after inspecting the scene and taking the statement of his son Jonathan, the only direct witness to what happened.
The judge provisionally closed the case last January, although she reopened it in March to include extensions of police reports, which until now claimed that It was an accident, So far, no conclusive evidence has been found that this was a homicide.
Coinciding with the change of head of the Court of Instruction number 5 of Martorell, the Mossos, now with the General Commission of Criminal Investigation in charge of the procedure, gave new impetus and focused their investigations on Jonathan Andic, from whom they asked for the cell phone to analyze it.
The Mossos base their suspicions on certain inconsistencies they noticed in the two statements made by Jonathan Andic after his father’s death – for example on where he was at the time of his fall, where he parked or whether he took photos during the excursion – and on the circumstances of the fall of the founder of Mango, on a road where They believe it is difficult for a body to fall off a cliff. without any force being exerted on it.
They are also investigating whether Jonathan Andic had a bad relationship with his father, a hypothesis that their relatives almost unanimously denied of the founder of Mango who were questioned by the Mossos as witnesses, including his two daughters, Judith and Sarah, or his uncle, to the managers and workers of Mango.
However, after a year, the legal case is still ongoing with the accident hypothesis, without the police, in a complex and thorough investigation, having put on the table solid evidence that suggests that Andic is dead. violently nor that the magistrate accepted formal accusations, as the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia clearly indicated in a press release dated October 17.
The lawyer Cristóbal Martell, who has been advising the businessman’s son for months, submitted a document to the Court to have access to the order of the magistrate who authorized the Mossos to request the device from Jonathan Andic, but To this day there is still no answer, in a matter subject to summary secrecy.
Legal sources close to the case admit it is difficult to clarify what happened so many months ago, in a place without cameras or eyewitnesses, but they regret that the Mossos continue without reaching a definitive conclusion on the matter, with the reputational damage this entails for the businessman’s son.
The family denounces “a public condemnation”
In addition, the family has expressed its discomfort with certain leaks, a matter that has already been brought to Parliament: last November, ERC asked the government – which has not yet responded – to clarify if you are investigating leaks who linked Jonathan Andic to the death of his father and whether a Mossos official apologized to the family.
In fact, the executors of the founder of Mango published an open letter on October 21 to defend the innocence of Jonathan Andic and denounce the “parallel sentence” of which he is the victim, which the family also insists on.
Sources close to the Andic family emphasize that they have collaborated as much as possible with the police and will continue to do so, even if they show his “disbelief” in the face of suspicion that weigh on Jonathan, and they trust that the investigation will get to the bottom of it so that what happened is clarified and the “ordeal” they are going through ends as quickly as possible.
In addition, they emphasize that the relationship between Andic’s three children – who shared the inheritance equally – is excellent and that It’s a “very close-knit” family.whose aspiration is that this criminal case does not overshadow the figure of his father.
Mango’s results continue to improve
Since the unexpected death of Andic, Mango has strived to ensure the continuity of management and avoid internal fractures.
Toni Ruiz, CEO since 2020 and trusted man of the company’s founder, he assumed the role of president a few days after Andic’s death, a position that the board of directors ratified a few weeks later, thus consolidating the management of the company into a single figure.
Andic’s appreciation for Ruiz’s work was evident when he promoted him to CEO and gave him, in 2023, 5% of Mango shares, which makes him the only shareholder outside the family.
Jonathan Andic, for his part, He is vice-president of the board, but he stepped away from day-to-day management and gave up his role as director of the Mango Man line in June.
After the execution of his father’s will, he assumed the presidency of the companies holding 95% of the remaining capital (Mango MNG Holding and Punta Na), which gave him grants strategic control of the family group.
