Like every year, the Forqué Awards kicked off the Spanish film awards season. The awards given by the producers recognized Los Domingos, the film by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, as the best Spanish work of the year. He beat rivals like Sirat, deaf And Maspalomas. An award which shows that the Basque filmmaker’s film is the favorite for the next Goya, which will take place this year in Barcelona on February 28.
The story of a young girl who wants to become a cloistered nun and the divide that this creates in her family, especially in her aunt, a non-believer, was, without a doubt, one of the most important titles of Spanish cinema in 2025. It won the Golden Shell in San Sebastian, was an absolute success at the box office and won the first major prize of the season. He wasn’t the only Forqué of the evening. It also won the award for Best Actress for Patricia López Arnáiz in the role of the aunt who tries to prevent her niece from entering the convent.
Accepting the award, Sandra Hermida recalled José Luis Cienfuegos, who died a few weeks ago, and Alauda Ruiz de Azúa emphasized that Los Domingos is a film that respects the intelligence of the viewer. “For us, this respect is a way of honoring the critical spirit and the independence of the spectator in the face of dogmas,” and he launched a message against religious indoctrination. “It’s a film that explores how religious indoctrination can warp your perception or feelings,” he said.
The rest of the prizes in the film categories were distributed among other favorites. José Ramón Soroiz won the best actor award for Maspalomasthe story of an old man who returns to the closet after living a busy sex life in the Canary Islands and who, after a health problem, enters a residence in the Basque Country. It repeats the award it won at the San Sebastian Festival and also shows its strength in view of the next Goya and the awards season.
Deaf, who started as another of the favorites with four nominations, won the prize in education and values. The producers of Eva Libertad’s film received the award surrounded by the film team and wanted to underline the importance of having been able to release the film with subtitles so that deaf people can go see it and so that cinemas “become a meeting place between the deaf and hearing communities”.
Decorated was chosen as best animated film, while Christmas crib won the award for best Ibero-American film. The Captive, Alejandro Amenábar won the Forqué awarded by the spectators, the public prize; blind spot won the award for best short film and Flowers for Antoniothe documentary about Antonio Flores with his daughter Alba as the protagonist won the award for best documentary, beating another favorite like Lonely afternoonsby Albert Serra.
