At least two people died and eight others were seriously injured in the shooting recorded Saturday evening (12/13) at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The information was confirmed by the university itself.
“There are eight victims in critical but stable condition in the hospital. The stay-at-home order remains in effect. The shooter(s) have not yet been arrested. Law enforcement is working in the area. We know there is a lot of fear, concern and uncertainty in the community at this time. Law enforcement is actively working to identify the fatal victims, and hospital staff are also working to identify those who were transported to the hospital,” wrote the institution in a press release.
The incident led the university to issue an emergency alert to the university community, advising students and staff to stay safe. The message, sent by telephone, recommended that doors be locked, cell phones turned off and that people remain hidden until further official notice.

According to the institution’s press release, the suspect was near the Barus & Holley building, where the physics and engineering departments operate. In this alert, the university reinforced safety protocols adopted in risky situations, such as evacuating the area when possible, seeking shelter if it is not safe to leave, and acting to protect yourself only as a last resort.

Providence police said officers were mobilized immediately after hearing gunshots and the area remained under a heavy police presence. Medical and emergency teams mobilized to help the victims, who were transported to area hospitals.
In a statement, police asked residents to avoid the campus area and stay home while the search continues. The investigation continues to clarify the circumstances of the attack and identify those responsible.
United States President Donald Trump said he was aware of what happened. According to him, the Federal Department of Investigation (FBI) has been called in and is working to support local authorities.
In a statement, the Boston FBI said it is providing assistance in the form of investigative resources, evidence collection, tactical support and victim assistance, in addition to asking the public to report suspicious activity.
The suspect has not yet been arrested
As of the last update, no suspects had been arrested.
According to a city police officer, the only information regarding the shooter is that he was a man dressed all in black and that he fled on foot after shooting.
