Against the bill on dosimetry and still under the slogan “Congress, enemy of the people”, social movements and left-wing executives are planning demonstrations for this Sunday (14), banking once again on the presence of artists.
The acts are planned in more than 40 cities and were scheduled last week after the Chamber of Deputies approved, in the early hours of Wednesday (10), the project which provides for a reduction in the sentences of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and other prisoners for participation in the acts of January 8, 2023.
The scenario is similar to that of the acts of September 21, which occurred after the Chamber approved, in the blink of an eye, the Blindagem PEC, which determined the opening of investigations against parliamentarians only with the approval of the Legislature.
At the time, the protests were hastily organized, much like those today, and had singer Caetano Veloso as their main supporter – he performed alongside Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil and other artists in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. The artist confirmed that he will perform again in this venue this Sunday, at 2 p.m., alongside Gil and Paulinho da Viola.
The acts against the Blindagem PEC brought together approximately 42.4 thousand people in São Paulo and 41.8 thousand people in Rio de Janeiro, according to a survey by Cebrap Political Debate Monitor and the NGO More in Common, an attendance similar to the Bolsonarista acts of September 7 in the same places.
Avenida Paulista featured performances by Otto, Leoni, Emicida and Rashid. Once again, the postcard of the capital São Paulo will serve as the stage for this Sunday’s demonstration, also scheduled for 2 p.m. This time, shows by Chico César, Samba de Maria and Mistura Popular are planned.
The organizers hope to be able to stop the progress of PL Dosimetry in the Senate. In September, three days after the protests against the Blindagem PEC, the House shelved the House-approved proposal.
The ministers of the Lula (PT) government were therefore instructed not to attend the events so as not to aggravate friction between the Executive and the Legislative.
With even more tense relations with the National Congress, this time the Planalto Palace did not provide the same guidance to its ministers. However, none of them has confirmed, for the moment, their presence at the events.
“I have respect for the presidents of the House, Hugo Motta, and of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre. I always defend the National Congress as an expression of democracy, but the Chambers have opted for an extremely unpopular program, which generates institutional instability, a program of political confrontation”, declared Edinho Silva, national president of the PT, in Leaf.
He called for action on social media. “I will always seek to be an agent of dialogue and political pacification, but I will never stop defending the strengthening of democracy and popular interests. I will never stop defending the historic positions of the PT,” he said.
The acts are organized by the Povo Sem Medo and Brasil Popular fronts, linked to the PSOL and the PT and which bring together movements such as the MST (Movement of Landless Rural Workers), the MTST (Movement of Homeless Workers) and the CUT (Central Única dos Trabalhadores).
“This program of the Congress, enemy of the people, has made its way,” says the national coordinator of Frente Povo Sem Medo, Ana Paula Perles. “This practice of voting, of taking away rights in the middle of the night, is becoming a practice that shames Brazilian society,” he added.
