Civil Defense rescued this Saturday (13) three children and other residents stuck in houses after the overflow of Lagoa das Flores, in Jardim América, in Araçatuba, in the interior of São Paulo.
Six people were rescued without injuries or medical treatment, in addition to the three children, two elderly people and a person with reduced mobility and respiratory problems. The action benefited from the support of the fire department and the city’s Public Security Secretariat.
The overflow was caused by the heavy rains that hit the city in recent days. The water invaded the houses in the neighborhood and it was therefore necessary to carry out a preventive evacuation of the residents.
Average precipitation in December in Araçatuba is 189.9 mm. So far, the accumulated volume has been 184.5 mm, a volume close to the historical average for the period.
Across the commune, at least 60 houses were flooded this Saturday. The most affected place was Jardim América, in the Lagoa das Flores region, where an automated electric pump failed to reduce the water flow.
Due to weather conditions, the town hall canceled the Comida de Boteco gastronomic event, which would have taken place at the Clibas de Almeida Prado exhibition center, as well as a free show by the Demônios da Garoa group. The live nativity scene, which was part of the Christmas program in a town square, was also canceled.
In Campinas, eight trees fell due to rain accompanied by gales this Saturday. A wall collapsed and hit part of the back of four houses. The properties were partially closed by Civil Protection. The Capivari and Atibaia rivers reached emergency level, but did not overflow.
