Despite the renovations, the property retains the original structure of the police building with its central patio, its metal stairs and the old corridors where the cells were lined up, now transformed into small houses, according to what he tells me. Manuel Siatelo. Real estate developers wanted to maintain … the historic character of the place, but this same respect for the architecture has also fueled a disturbing atmosphere, especially among those who know of its past.
According to community records, one of the most talked about incidents occurred a little over a year ago. Firefighters and police had to break down the door to one of the apartments after the tenant alerted that there was a man inside.
Siatelo tells me that the agents inspected every room without finding any trace of intruders. There were no signs of violence, no objects moved. However, after this episode, the woman never occupied the house again. “She said she didn’t feel alone there, that something was watching her,” says a neighbor who prefers to remain anonymous.
As the weeks went by, conversations between neighbors began to reveal more disturbing testimonies. A neighbor in the same corridor said that in a mirror placed behind the television had repeatedly seen the reflection of a man behind it. Every time he turned around, there was no one there. “I thought it was my imagination, but it happened more than once,” he explained, remembering those moments with obvious nervousness.
Mirrors in this building seem to be a constant – some say mirrors are portals, but I prefer not to believe that -. Several people claim to have perceived shadows or diffuse figures reflected on glass or metal surfaces, especially at night or on the coldest days of winter, when the humidity accentuates the metallic smell of old structures.
Testimonies from other eras
A few months later, a fortuitous event rekindles the mystery. A man, Luis Morán, while passing the building, recognized the place and told a former colleague that his mother had lived there years before. According to her, the woman left suddenly after suffering unexplained nocturnal episodes.
“She would wake up in the middle of the night and see a man watching her from the edge of the bed. “He never spoke, he just looked at her,” his son said. At that time, no one made the link between the event and the property’s past. However, the coincidental stories – the male figure, the looks, the reflection – began to weave a story that many in the region already describe as a presence that wouldn’t leave.
THE former Franco police station It was the scene of interrogations, arrests and, according to some local historians, like Siatelo, also episodes of repression. Although there is no public record of specific tragedies, the character of the building and the solidity of its structure arouse in many a sense of oppression and violence.
Specialists in paranormal issues linked to urban heritage agree that these places, steeped in history, “keep the accumulated emotional energy”, the result of the experiences of those who inhabited them, says Rafael de Alba. Not everyone believes in paranormal phenomena, but even the most skeptical recognize that the memory of a building can be felt, especially when it preserves intact the spaces where intense or painful events occurred.
Today, anyone who walks past this apartment complex only sees a renovated facade with industrial elegance. But for some neighbors, each step of the metal staircase or each cell door transformed into a home is a reminder that, under the new life of the building, it still breathes and the shadow of its past is felt.
