The farewell to Salgueiro is symbolic of the artist’s trajectory. Haroldo fell in love with the school in 1963, when he gave up being part of the official jury of the parades organized by the Liga Independente das Escolas de Samba (Liesa) to support the association after attending the parade that made the association champions that year, with a storyline about Chica da Silva, one of the first of the Rio carnival focused on blackness.
On Saturday (13), the school paid tribute to the artist. In a recording shared on social networks, to the applause and emotional cries of the audience, the musicians sang an excerpt from the 1963 samba. In the caption of the publication, the group reinforced the importance of Haroldo:
“Our tribute to Haroldo Costa was delivered in the truest way we know: in the form of a samba. Because that is how he fell in love with the Academy, that is how Salgueiro entered his heart and never left again. The song that resonated was Xica da Silva, from 1963. The same samba that changed the course of its history. Today, this samba is sung again not as a memory, but as a gesture of love, gratitude and reverence. Each verse carried a memory. Each note brought back the man who lived, defended and immortalized our Torrão.
In a note published this Sunday (14), the governor of the State of Rio, Cláudio Castro, also regrets the departure of the artist, recalling his achievements in carnival, performing arts and cinema.
“The world of samba, in Rio de Janeiro and in Brazil, is in mourning. We have lost Haroldo Costa, actor, director, writer and one of the greatest references of carnival. A master of our culture, who helped generations to understand the greatness of parades, sambas and the identity of our people. The defender of popular art also entered the history of theater, being the first black actor to perform at the Municipal Theater. His work is part of the heritage of our state and will continue to live in the memory of everyone, especially those who love Carnival.”
On social networks, Mayor Eduardo Paes also paid tribute:
“Yesterday Haroldo Costa left us, a giant of Brazilian culture. Guardian of samba, Carnival and Afro-Brazilian culture, he was an actor, director, renowned commentator and judge of parades and the Golden Standard. He dedicated his life to samba and Carnival with dignity and a deep love for the people of samba. His legacy is eternal.”
