In another calm electoral day, Chileans went to the polls this Sunday to elect the president who will govern them from March, an occasion in which Gabriel Boric reminded his successor that the president-elect “does it” … “This should belong to all Chileans.”
The opposition candidate, from the right Jose Antonio Kastupon receipt of the message, assured that, as demonstrated by his political career as a municipal councilor and deputy, he will never close the doors to his adversaries.
With a participation similar to that recorded in the first round of November 16, where more than 85% of those surveyed voted, voters went early to the polls, which close at seven in the afternoon (one in the morning, time on the Spanish peninsula).
According to all projections and opinion polls, the representative of the radical right, José Antonio Kast, would win over the official candidate and communist activist, Jeannette Jarawho has concentrated all his efforts not to be identified as a continuation of the current administration.
The first to vote was President Gabriel Boric, in his hometown, Punta Arenas, in the far south of the country. After the vote, the president called on citizens to go to the polls peacefully and reminded them that “our decision affects the common destiny of our country.”
Boric said that “the president elected today must be the president of all Chileans”, and added that one must be aware that all public policies are always built on other state policies already developed by previous leaders.
The president also ruled out that the election, in which Kast would probably win, should be interpreted as an evaluation of his mandate. “I call on citizens to vote to continue building our democracy…I do not believe whether or not this is a plebiscite for the government…the center of the discussion is what Chileans want for the future,” he said.
Boric clarified that “here we govern until the last day, until the change of government on March 11. “There is no time to relax.”
No political colors
José Antonio Kast voted in a rural town in the Santiago metropolitan area with a crowd of supporters. After echoing Boric’s remarks, he acknowledged that the winner will have an enormous responsibility and “must be the president of all Chileans.”
“All the issues that concern us have no political color… If we are elected, we will clearly show that we are a team available to all Chileans, whatever their differences,” he added.
“We will give our lives to rebuild our homeland… But this will depend on the collaboration of parliamentarians. “Not everything depends on the will of the president and his ministers.”

Asked about his government’s expectations, Kast stressed that in the first 90 days he would seek to lay the groundwork for the rest of the administration, but he made clear that it is clear that not all problems will be resolved within that time frame.
As he promised, “we will give our lives to rebuild our homeland. This is why we call for unity to resolve the small problems that affect citizens. This will also depend on the collaboration of parliamentarians from the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate; “Everything does not happen by the will of the president and his ministers.”
