Jose Vina (Valencia, 1953) is one of the leading Spanish experts on aging. A medical doctor and professor at the Department of Physiology at the University of Valencia, Spain, this doctor reveals how much of longevity is due to lifestyle and how much is due to genetics.
In an interview published this Sunday by the newspaper Murcia’s opinionViña explains that “aging is natural and, what’s more, it is multifactorial” and that there are several things that can help, such as “stress management, nutrition, exercise and supplements. “This will increase life expectancy and, above all, arrive in good health.”
Viña recalls that “up to the age of 30 we mature and from this age we begin to age”, even if “there are rotating stages which generally occur between the ages of 40 and 60, which has been demonstrated recently.
Regarding people whose longevity exceeds 100 years, Viña explains that “to reach the average longevity, which is 80 years, you have to lead a good life, but To reach 110, you have to add genetics.
He also emphasizes the importance of physical exercise: “Physical activity must meet three conditions: it must be multi-component, that is to say it must not be limited to walking, but walk while doing strength training or balance“, lists first.
“It must also be personalized because the same exercise program is not suitable for a 90-year-old woman as it is for her 20-year-old grandson; and social because exercise has Better results when done as a group than when you do it alone,” he adds.
And regarding three habits that can prolong life, Viña emphasizes that “the first thing to do is to categorically eliminate, drugs and tobacco. And if I had to choose, I think I would say: exercise, nutrition and lifestyle. This could be the formula for reaching old age with a good quality of life. But it is also very important to have periodic check-ups or monitor blood pressure,” he explains.
