The leader of the PL in the Chamber of Deputies, Sóstenes Cavalcante (RJ), confirmed on Sunday the resignation of MP Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), saying that it was a strategic decision.
“The resignation was neither impromptu nor emotional. It was a strategic decision in the face of a shameful decision by the STF, which ignored legal procedure and advanced fundamental constitutional guarantees,” he said in a message on X.
The majority of members of the first panel of the STF voted on Friday, in virtual plenary, for the immediate dismissal of Zambelli, and considered unconstitutional the session of the Chamber which maintained the mandate of the parliamentarian.
According to Cavalcante, “by resigning before the conclusion of the revocation, Zambelli preserves his rights, expands the possibilities of defense and avoids the most serious effects of a clearly politicized trial, gaining legal room to maneuver to seek freedom and remain in Italy.”
“It is not an evasion. It is a legal calculation in an exceptional environment. When the Court loses its impartiality, strategy becomes the only form of protection against arbitrariness.”
According to previously published media reports on Zambelli’s resignation request, the Speaker of the House, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), ordered the summons of the replacement, Adilson Barroso (PL-SP).
