MADRID, December 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Far-right candidate José Antonio Kast won the second round of Chile’s presidential election, held this Sunday, with 58.61 percent of the vote, ahead of the 41.39 percent of his rival, left-wing coalition candidate Jeannette Jara.
These data were published by the Electoral Service of Chile (Servel) and correspond to 100 percent of the control already published on its official website.
The table shows that 10,380,322 valid votes were cast, including 6,084,364 for Kast and 4,295,958 for Jara. The total votes cast, 11,167,420, includes 650,294 invalid votes (5.82%) and 136,804 blank votes (1.23%).
With this result, Kast confirms the predictions which predicted his victory in the second round thanks to the support of the right-wing candidates who are not in the second round and despite Jara’s victory in the first vote.
The left-wing candidate acknowledged her defeat in a message on her social network X account, where she stressed that “democracy spoke loud and clear”.
“I have just contacted President-elect José Antonio Kast to wish him success for the good of Chile,” he said before assuring his voters that “we will continue to work for a better life in our homeland.” “Together and standing together, as we have always done,” he added.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric also congratulated Kast in a telephone conversation broadcast live on the government account of the same social network, and in which he recognized the “clear triumph” of the far right.
“You have been elected President of the Republic of Chile and therefore of all Chileans. And this, you know, is a great responsibility that must be approached with a lot of affection, with a lot of humility, with a lot of work. And I want you to know that as President of the Republic and soon former President of the Republic, I will always be available to collaborate in the destiny of the country,” Boric assured.
Kast, for his part, thanked the call and said he hopes “this will be a very orderly and respectful transition.” “And of course, on March 11, I swear accordingly, (and) after March 11, I would also be very interested to have your opinion, your vision of what the country is,” he said.
