The Federal Police has 15 days to finalize the assessment of the state of health of former President Jair Bolsonaro, in order to support the STF’s decision on the necessity and authorization of the operation.
The defense of former President Jair Bolsonaro announced this Sunday (14) the confirmation of a diagnosis of two bilateral inguinal hernias after carrying out an ultrasound. The procedure was carried out at the Federal Police Superintendence of Brasilia. The information was disclosed by one of the former president’s lawyers via a social network, according to g1.
According to the defense statement, the medical team that performed the ultrasound identified the two hernias and recommended that the former president undergo surgery, indicating that this is the only form of definitive treatment for the clinical condition presented.
According to g1, an ultrasound was requested by the defense on Thursday (11) and authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), on Saturday (13). The on-site examination, in the premises of the Federal Police, was carried out by the former president’s private medical team. Bolsonaro has been detained since November 25 and is serving time following a conviction for attempted coup.
The request for an ultrasound was a defense effort aimed at updating the state of health of the former president. On Thursday, Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered the federal police to carry out a medical examination to assess the real need for surgical intervention, calling into question the validity of tests previously presented by lawyers, which dated back more than three months.
In the motion requesting the ultrasound, the defense argued that the procedure was non-invasive, quick, did not require sedation or complex hospital structure and could be performed on the PF premises. The objective, according to the lawyers, was precisely “to provide the most recent examinations (…) and facilitate the rapid conclusion of the official examination”.
The order indicated the doctor Bruno Luís Barbosa Cherulli to perform the ultrasound and assigned to the process a “emergency nature”.
In a medical report attached to the request on Tuesday (10), Bolsonaro’s defense had already informed the STF of the need for surgical intervention. The report states that the former president has been complaining of pain and discomfort in the inguinal region in recent weeks. These complaints, according to doctors, would be aggravated by the increase in intermittent abdominal pressure, caused by the attacks of hiccups that the former president experienced and which do not stop.
The defense reiterated the severity of the symptoms, saying the hiccups “has already transported the petitioner to hospital due to episodes of shortness of breath and syncope, revealing a real risk of sudden decompensation and which now requires, as has been reported, surgical intervention”. The lawyers indicated “new medical complications that require immediate attention” of the STF regarding the state of health of the former president.
