President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) congratulated José Antonio Kast, elected President of Chile this Sunday (14). “I congratulate José Kast on his election to the presidency of Chile and the Chilean people for their participation in a democratic, transparent and orderly electoral process. I wish the elected president every success in exercising his future mandate,” Lula wrote on social networks.
Lula also said that Brazil will continue to work with the new Chilean government “in favor of strengthening the excellent bilateral relations, the strong economic and commercial ties that unite Brazil and Chile, for regional integration and the maintenance of South America as a zone of peace.”
A founder of the Republican Party, Kast won the election with 58 percent of the vote and declared in his first speech that he would form a government for “all Chileans.” He also asked for the opposition’s help in fighting organized crime, the issue that most concerns Chileans today and which made the difference in Kast’s victory.
