Sitrex Transportes, the owner of the truck that intercepted Rodoanel Mário Covas on Wednesday (12) morning, in the case of a false bomb threat, said in a statement that the 52-year-old driver adequately complied with all required standards during the trip from Peru, where he was transporting a shipment of explosives, to São Bernardo do Campo, the company’s headquarters.
The company confirmed that “it is noted that the driver adequately adhered to all legal and safety procedures, especially with regard to rest and travel periods, and sufficient speed, which is the information obtained through the electronic vehicle monitoring service,” confirming that the truck was empty.
Sitrex also stated that it was “unrestrainedly focused on providing care to our employee, who is receiving treatment in good health and in the process of recovery,” and praised the work done by the authorities in the accident and in supporting the driver.
After treatment at the Itapsirica da Serra General Hospital, the driver gave a statement to the civil police and provided more details about the incident.
He said he had taken a shipment of explosives to Peru and was returning with an empty truck. The driver said that upon arriving at kilometer 41 of the ring road, two cars chased him after throwing a stone at the windshield of the trailer, where the police found fragments.
After four kilometers, according to the report, the truck was closed and six armed men got out of the cars. Three of them entered the cab, tied up the driver and put him in the back of the truck, on the bed. The driver said that at that moment he heard the criminals saying that the truck would be used to transport the weapons that were in their cars to Rio de Janeiro.
Moments later, a company representative called and the criminals released the driver to speak. He told police that he tried to escape and clashed with the men. But they attacked him, tied him up, and placed him next to the fake bomb.
The driver also indicated that the truck was placed on the highways by a criminal, who, according to him, had no experience with vehicles of this type. The reason they left the car was because of the blocking carried out by the company remotely.
According to the accident report, which Bound Had he been able to arrive, the driver would have called his company at approximately 5:30 a.m. to inform him that he had been kidnapped and that he had bombs strapped to his body inside the truck. He also said that another driver from the company would be in the same situation. However, the company representative denied this other case.
Police Chief Marcio Fruit said he was investigating information that the driver was handcuffed and had been partially freed by other truck drivers who helped him. Security camera footage will be analyzed for confirmation.
Due to the accident, Rodoanel Street was completely closed from 5 a.m. until approximately 10:10 a.m. During that period, the driver spent at least four hours with his hands tied and the fake bomb next to him, near the passenger seat. He was only rescued at 9:15 a.m. and attended by rescuers from SPMar, the franchisee that runs Rodoanel.
Jett ruled out that it was an explosive, but rather an artifact made of cardboard tubes and wires. The material was seized and sent for forensic examination.
First, the truck was placed on the side of the road and then a company employee removed it, but it will be taken to the police station.
