Although the identities of the victims have not yet been officially confirmed, Los Angeles police said homicide squads were called to the scene and the case is currently being treated as an “apparent homicide.” In a statement posted on social media, the company said no additional details were available and the investigation was ongoing.
Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton stressed that no detainees or suspects were being questioned. “I will not confirm whether anyone is being heard at this time or not. We will try to speak to as many family members as possible,” he said.
CNN reported that a family spokesperson confirmed the death. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, a man and a woman, approximately 78 and 68 years old respectively, were found dead inside the residence.
The news immediately caused emotion in the political and cultural world. California Governor Gavin Newsom mourned the loss and said he was “heartbroken.” Barack Obama noted that the filmmaker maintained “a deep belief in the goodness of people” throughout his life, while Kamala Harris said Reiner’s work “had an impact on generations of Americans.”
Rob Reiner rose to prominence in the 1970s as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the series “All in the Family,” but established himself behind the camera with films such as “This Is Spinal Tap” (1984) and the classic “Harry and Sally: Made for Each Other” (1989). Throughout his career, he has been involved in various social causes, including supporting marriage equality and child development programs funded by tobacco taxes. The circumstances of these deaths are still under investigation.
