“I believe few deaths have generated as many supporters and as many expressions of dismay as that of Robe Iniesta and, of course, he will have this plaque.” The words of the delegate for Culture of Madrid City Hall, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, confirmed that they would follow the proposal made by Más Madrid last Thursday.
The announcement of the municipal tribute comes a few days after the death of Extremadura singer and composer Roberto Iniesta Ojea, known as Robe and leader of the rock group Extremoduro, who died last Wednesday at the age of 63. To remember it, the spokesperson for the opposition party, Eduardo Rubiño, proposed placing the plaque in Carabanchel. There, in 1991, Extremoduro offered his first solo concert. It was in the Sukursal Rock room, at 145 Vía Carpetana.
The delegate underlined – to justify her decision – that the artist “has enough links with Madrid” so that, “if he cannot be placed in this house, whatever the problem, let’s find another place that is appropriate for him to be remembered”. Currently, the premises which housed the hall function as a supermarket for a large food chain.
“Robe Iniesta was not only an exceptional musician, but also a rock poet and one of the most influential creators of contemporary Spanish music. He connected with entire generations and knew how to translate the reality, contradictions and emotions of ordinary people into words and chords,” defended Más Madrid city councilor Pilar Sánchez during the session.
The tribute to this place, as stated by Rivera de la Cruz, will be conditional on the “perceptual permission” of the community of neighbors where the Sukursal Rock hall was located. In this sense, the delegate added that, if there was “a problem” with the installation of the plaque, another place could be found that would “also be suitable.”
