Material fatigue in the ‘Strength Manual’. The President of the Government presented himself this Monday in Moncloa to take stock of the traditional end of the year. At a time of maximum weakness due to cases of corruption and sexual harassment surrounding its … The executive and his party, Pedro Sánchez, went on the attack from his first intervention, presenting himself as the victim of “campaigns of personal harassment, mud and lies” which seek to destabilize his government.
In this context, the president does not plan to resign or call elections. Additionally, he showed his “determination and energy” to move forward, as inauguration partners consider the legislature liquidated. Nothing new. No rabbit in the hat capable of generating one of the illusions to which the president has already accustomed us to carry out an escape exercise. Only a meeting with Oriol Junqueras, already in January, to try to dispel the doubts and the “shame” of certain allies who are beginning to think about what exhausts them more: continuing to support or letting down the executive.
Sánchez denied any connivance or opacity with the irregular behavior of his closest environment and had to resort to the trick of Marcial Dorado to avoid self-criticism to remain oblivious to what was happening in his circle of trust, from José Luis Ábalos, through Santos Cerdán or Francisco Salazar: “We know more about someone who goes on vacation and gets on his yacht than sitting in the Council of Ministers”, he declared, with a message addressed to rue Génova.
Aware that these two questions are those which break the confidence of citizens and his partners in the Executive, the president wanted to begin his speech by addressing motu proprio the questions which he knew would end up capitalizing on during the press conference which followed. Sánchez followed the argumentation he deployed to respond to these cases, defending “force” in his actions and zero tolerance in the face of alleged irregularities surrounding the management of his environment.
“The biggest historical mistake would be to entrust the government to the PP and Vox,” he said, trying to keep the wall he built in 2023 standing, despite the fact that the bricks of his allies show more and more cracks. Even if the Executive strives to make government action visible, the truth is that the founding cause remains the one that struggles to keep ranks close. This, if the first desertions do not occur.
Sánchez shows no signs of wanting to change course and is not even considering a major overhaul of his cabinet as demanded by the minority coalition partner. The president continues to affirm that this government “is good for the country” and “is profitable” for the Spaniards, endorsing the image, according to him, distorted, projected of the Executive in televised meetings, by a right-wing media which aims to “wear up people”.
