The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, received this Monday (15/12), at the Palace of La Moneda, the president-elect José Antonio Kast, leader of the Republican Party and ultraconservative. The meeting marks the official start of the government transition process, following Kast’s victory in the second round of the presidential election, in which he comfortably defeated communist candidate Jeannette Jara.
The inauguration of the new president is scheduled for March 11.
Before entering the presidential palace, Kast said he expected a “republican conversation” with Boric and thanked him for the welcome. The president-elect also stressed that the current head of state retains “a great responsibility” until the official handover of command.

“I hope to exercise it well when I take office on March 11,” he said.

The meeting takes place in a political scenario marked by strong polarization in Chile and symbolizes the return of Pinochetism within the Chilean executive.
On social media, Boric said the meeting had an institutional character. “Just as we agreed during the traditional telephone call, we received at the Moneda Palace the president-elect, José Antonio Kast, with his wife, Pía Adriasola, for a working meeting that marked the beginning of an orderly and exemplary transfer of command,” he wrote.
“The ability to work for the well-being of Chile is what makes our country great and moves forward,” he added.
Kast arrived accompanied by his wife, María Pía Adriasola, and the main members of his political team, including Jorge Quiroz, Claudio Alvarado, María Jesús Wulf and Arturo Squella, names linked to the ideological and programmatic core of his campaign and who are already beginning to draw the guidelines of the next government.

The meeting was preceded by a phone call from Boric shortly after the election results were announced on Sunday (14/12). During the call, the outgoing president congratulated Kast on his victory and invited him to start conversations about the transition.
According to La Moneda, this gesture was presented as a demonstration of respect for democratic institutions and republican standards.
