Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), determined this Monday 15 that the Ministry of Justice will be notified to formalize the request for extradition of deputy Alexandre Ramagem to serve the sentence of 16 years, 1 month and 15 days, in a closed initial regime, in the process of coup plot.
In his order, the minister specifies that the deputy “escaped from the district of guilt”. Last month, the first panel of the STF recognized the final and unappealable decision of the trial against the “crucial core” of the coup plot, that is, it declared that the convictions are final and there is no further possibility of appeal, and then determined that the execution of the sentences should begin. Ramagem is the only one not to have been arrested.
Moraes ordered the Judicial Secretariat of the STF to share with the Ministry of Justice the documents necessary to file the extradition request. This is the first step towards complying with extradition procedures.
Despite being banned from leaving Brazil and having his passport confiscated, Ramagem – who headed the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) under the Bolsonaro government – fled to Miami, United States, following his conviction in the coup case.
One of the consequences of a conviction is the loss of the warrant. After certifying the end of the process, the minister ordered the notification to the Chamber of Deputies of Ramagem’s dismissal, which has not yet been done.
Last Wednesday 10, the President of the House, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), asked the deputy, through an opinion, to express himself in the impeachment process.
Previously, MP Sóstenes Cavalcante (RJ), leader of the PL in the House, said that Ramagem could resign from his mandate in 2026.
