Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro would be welcome in Belarus if he left office, but that there had been no discussions with Maduro, according to excerpts of an interview with the US channel Newsmax published on Monday by a Telegram channel linked to the Lukashenko administration.
Tensions are high between the U.S. and Venezuelan governments, with a large-scale U.S. military buildup in the southern Caribbean, U.S. raids on boats suspected of drug trafficking and comments from U.S. President Donald Trump that land operations could soon begin in Venezuela.
The Venezuelan government says the United States is seeking regime change to take control of the country’s vast oil reserves.
