Verdão intends to keep his three main goalkeepers for next season
Palmeiras still has no response from Marcelo Lomba after proposing a contract extension until December 2026. The player’s contract ends at the end of this year and, without a definition of the athlete, Verdão lives a scenario of uncertainty for the goalkeeper position next season.
Indeed, although he is the third option for this position, Lomba is considered a leader in the locker room. His experience is considered an asset and therefore Verdão does not want to lose the 38-year-old. If the athlete does not accept the renewal proposal, the tendency is for the young Aranha, trained at the base of the club, to gain more place in the squad.
During the 2025 season, Marcelo Lomba made six appearances for Palmeiras. The last of them was the 3-1 victory against Ceará, on the last day of the Brasileirão. The goalkeeper has played 28 matches in total for Verdão since arriving in January 2022. During this period, he has won seven titles: two Brasileirãos (2022 and 2023), three Paulistões (2022, 2023 and 2024), a Recopa Sul-Americana (2022) and a Brazilian Super Cup (2023).
Marcelo Lomba’s competitors in the Palmeiras goal
Currently, Carlos Miguel occupies the starting position in the team. Recruited from Nottingham Forest in August, the athlete took time to seize his first opportunity as a starter. This only happened after Weverton was injured in October.
The experienced goalkeeper, in turn, became the team’s second option for goal. However, the club keeps the player in its schedule for 2026 and shows no intention of trading him. Remember that, in recent weeks, certain Brazilian clubs have expressed their interest in the player, including Grêmio.
