President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva avoided confirming, this Monday, speculation that he intends to veto the so-called dosimetry bill (PL), a proposal currently under consideration in the Senate and which aims to offer a reduced sentence to those convicted of an attempted coup on January 8, 2023.
Despite this, the PT member argued that former President Jair Bolsonaro was directly involved in the coup plot and, therefore, “deserved to be condemned.” Given this, Lula declared that he would make his decision accompanied by “God”.
“When he arrives at my office (the dosimetry PL), I will make the decision with God. What I assess is that a citizen who tried to carry out a coup in this country has his responsibility and deserves to be condemned. I do not judge the dosimetry that he deserves to be condemned, but I will make the best decision for Brazil”, he responded, in an interview with the “SBT News” channel.
In the same conversation, Lula spoke of the impasse in which the choice of a right-wing candidate to face him in the 2026 elections finds itself. In fact, initially there was a definition according to which Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) would be the representative of the conservative camp in the election. However, Flávio himself later admitted that he might drop out of the presidential race if he managed to secure an amnesty for his father.
“I cannot say who for me is my best opponent (in the 2026 elections). What I can say is that I am ready to face them all at the same time. I will compare the policies that I have put in place with the public policies put in place by my adversaries,” Lula said.
Finally, Lula was asked if Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) would be chosen for the same role on the list of candidates for re-election next year.
“I think it’s too early to define things regarding the elections. Obviously, I already have candidates for governor in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, but the ones I want may not want to be. Alckmin has such breadth that he will be able to choose what he wants to be. I will tell him: ‘choose what you want to be'”, he replied.
