The Department for Equality, led by Ana Redondohas not yet called Crisis committee for assassinations due to gender violence, an organization that analyzes the increase in this violence against women, despite the fact that at the beginning … Ten days a month, five people were murdered by their partners and ex-spouses. This is the worst start to December in years. And the horror still amounts to eight victims if we count since November 22. Questioned by ABC, sources from the Ministry of Equality explain that they will convene the body, but that they do not “yet” know when.
The crisis committee is an instrument created by this department to analyze each murder of these women and that of their minor children — the analysis of possible cases of indirect violence is included. The aim of the extraordinary meeting is to detect what is failing in the protection system and to improve the institutional response and measures to prevent new victims.
It is usually activated when five or more murders occur in a short period of time. At the table, the minister can summon representatives of Inside, JusticePresidency of Government, Health, Youth and Childhood, autonomous communities affected by crimes and judicial bodies such as the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) and the Prosecutor’s Office.
The extraordinary lack of response after the latest murders of women between 29 and 50 years old in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Catarroja, El Viso del Alcor (Seville), Torrijos (Toledo) and Alicante contrasts with what happened on July 10, the last crisis committee assembled, when Minister Redondo urgently met with the ministries and communities involved to ask them that “all instruments of the State be on maximum alert and coordinated and greased” after five of these crimes.
Equality announced a service strengthening plan and coordination between institutions ahead of Christmas celebrations. But sources from the organizations that are usually part of these crisis committees have privately questioned that after this latest peak in December, there is still no call from the ministry for a joint analysis of the increase in cases and their further strengthening, especially at this time.
At the same time, judicial sources are concerned about a progressive “trivialization” or “normalization” of the figures of gender-based violence in society, which means that we are losing sight of the importance of the fight against the scourge of violence against women. A few days ago, the coroner Miguel Lorentespecialized in gender violence, insisted in a meeting with journalists that the institutional response cannot be limited to cases with complaints, but rather must take into account other factors such as the imitation effect, vacation periods and periods of separation or divorce, considered to be at increased risk.
