Nubarrones in the socialist universe. Summary of the fateful death of the PSOE, days that portend an uncertain future. The press release invites the columnist to return to an exquisite work by Olivier Rolin, The meteorologist (Libros del Asteroide), the reconstruction of the agricultural history of Alekséi Feodósievich Vangengheim, first director of the Hydrometeorological Service of the USSR. A scientist at the pinnacle of Soviet power who was added to the list of prisoners in Stalin’s purges. Using the correspondence sent to his daughter, Rolin reconstructed Vangengheim’s disgrace, since his arrest on January 8, 1934 in Moscow – on the night which should have ended at the Bolshoi and ended up in the cells of the Lubyanka – putting an end to the cold solitude of the Gulag. A cloud expert who did not return to see the sun, due to Stalinist paranoia of searching for potential culprits. One more collateral victim.
The storm does not calm down in Spanish politics. A three-pronged storm is raging over the government: persistent parliamentary weakness, a multitude of legal attacks and a trickle of mishandled sexual harassment cases in Ferraz. In the socialist ranks, it punishes the rot of corruption, even if we insist that it is peripheral, but the loss of credibility of the party in front of women, the electoral support of Pedro Sánchez during the last reconquest of power, is more damaging. The president affirms that “he deserves the punishment to govern” despite land, sea and air harassment, even if attrition accelerates on the table of Extremadura and Aragon, an electoral calendar marked in his eyes by the PP. It is relevant to ask whether there is room for Sánchez’s resistance, reformulated so many times, and which country could lead to a failure of the PSOE, now that the partners of all pelajes, from the PNV to the ERC, are raising their inconveniences.
From the Catalan Atalaya, it is logical to think that Salvador Illa, Sánchez’s first squire, could go from the status of main territorial fief to that of president following the hemorrhage of Cesa. He shored up his presidency with a number of complex compliance deals – such as one-time funding – that depended on Sánchez’s approval. Without the finalization of the agreement, the leader of the CPS would remain in the elements. And the Catalan Parliament, which has now turned to the left, should also rethink itself. An anticipation: when partners want to be stable because they lose incentives, a variable geometry appears, and it is prudent not to exclude new protagonists in the match.
But these are later screens. The most reliable prognosis is always immediate. There is no electoral support in Spain, but the cold wind seduces the activism of the PSC, disappointed by the influx of outgoing presidents who undermine the feminist narrative and the beauty of the exercise of power. There is reason to say that one of the suyos will exercise the secretariat of the Ferraz Organization because of the Santos Cerdán scandal. I avoided organic command and preferred to help Sánchez from a discreet complexity. Now was not the time to get burned. Now, with the crisis spilling over, it is causing damage. He is not a meteorologist like the failed Vengengheim, but he has maps on socialist cartography to understand that he could be the last collateral victim of the storm.
