While Flamengo live in Doha with the hope of winning their second world championship tomorrow, facing Paris Saint-Germain in the Intercontinental Cup final, a red and black team was far from having a good experience in Qatar. The fan who traveled to the Middle East to attend the tournament was detained by police for four days for using irregular documents. He was released yesterday by the courts, but he went through a difficult time.
The Flamengo player, whose name will not be released at this time because his family fears reprisals from Qatari authorities, is a member of one of the club’s biggest organizations and was arrested upon his arrival at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium for the first edition of the tournament, the 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul, last Wednesday. He presented irregular documents in an attempt to enter the arena with an organized banner – Qatar needs special permission for this.
“There was an incident at the entrance to the stadium, three Brazilian citizens were arrested, two have already been released, and the embassy in Doha is following the case and providing consular support,” Itamaraty’s press office said in a note this weekend.

The fan traveled to Doha with his girlfriend, who asked GLOBO not to reveal names or images. The Flamengo player’s defense declined to comment. Contacted by GLOBO, Itamaraty assured that he was offering the necessary assistance, but refused to provide further details on the matter.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Brazilian Embassy in Doha, is aware of the matter and is providing appropriate consular assistance to the Brazilian national,” the agency said in a statement.
On Sunday, he was provisionally released after four days under the regime and was awaiting his trial which took place Monday evening. His belongings, like his cell phone, were in the possession of the police. Yesterday, he was able to collect them and slept with his girlfriend at the hotel.
Supporters were unable to attend any of the intercontinental matches, neither the victory against Cruz Azul nor Pyramids (2-0) last Saturday. Tomorrow, Flamengo and PSG will play the tournament final at 2 p.m. (Brasilia time), at the same Ahmad bin Ali stadium.
